Welcome to Williams Lake truck filled with goodies collected by Thunder Mountain Speedway for the Salvation ArmyLast night Thunder Mountain Speedway hosted the first annual 'Christmas in July' toy and food drive for the Salvation Army.

Many of the local race fans who came out to enjoy a night of racing donated cans of food, rice, pasta, miscellaneous dry goods, as well as toys, stuffed animals, and various games. Fans who hadn't previously heard about the food and toy drive were eager to donate cash to a great cause.

Drivers and race teams did their part too, filling the back of the welcometowilliamslake.ca truck with all sorts of goodies.

The accomplished road racer and winner in numerous North American racing series opens his 2010 schedule this weekend at Mosport International Raceway near Toronto, Ontario.

Ryley Seibert finished eighth on Saturday night at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Williams Lake - his home town trackWilliams Lake racer also tests NASCAR stock car at Thunder Mountain Speedway

Ryley Seibert finished eighth on Saturday night at his hometown track Thunder Mountain Speedway. The Williams Lake, BC, teenager overcame adverse conditions in the 100 lap main event to score the impressive finish.

After qualifying fourth of 16 entries in time trials the rookie Seibert started the main event in 12th position. ARCA Series rules state that a rookie driver must start behind the experienced competitors.

Canadian Tire sponsored ARCA West race car #52

The stock car racing at Thunder Mountain Speedway had a good turnout of fans for the season opener. Two locals are racing in the ARCA West OK Tires series this year, Garnet Grimard in the 52 car and Ryley Seibert in the 09 car. The ARCA West OK Tire Series had a total of 16 cars come to town for the races and ran a 100 lap main event.

Chucks Thunder Mountain season openerChucks Thunder Mountain Speedway opens their season tonight with all four local classes heating up the oval. There is also a special event as the ARCA WEST OK Tire Race Series Roll into town for the Heartland Toyota 100.

The gates open at 3:00, time trials start at 5:00 and racing begins at 6:00. The Lakers Car Club will be making an appearance during the evening. Their Cruise Night run will leave the Stampede grounds at 8:00 and make a 'Show Lap' around the track between races.

The track will of course have their usual concessions, 50/50 draw, prize give-aways and all the thundering engines, dust and mayhem that always accompanies racing on the 3/8 mile tri-oval track.

It was a night of surprises at Chuck’s Mountain Speedway as racers hit the pavement for the first Friday night racing event at the Williams Lake track.

Arnie Kunka, his Pontiac Grand Prix, and his pit crew were in top form on the evening, as Kunka reclaimed the track record he previously held for many years during the time trials to kick off the action.

Kunka, competing in the street stocks class, posted a time of 17.693 seconds during time trials, breaking the existing track record by two tenths of a second.

Moving on to the dash, heat and main event, Kunka and his opposition, Bob Lowen, traded victories throughout the night.

When it comes to sports, Vancouverites are like most Canadians: They love their Olympics and their hockey, a new poll suggests.

An Ipsos Reid poll released this week surveyed 2,000 Canadians and found that the vast majority of us consider ourselves fans of the Winter and Summer Olympics, as well as the NHL.

However, when it comes to how Vancouverites differ from the rest of Canada, soccer is a prime example. More than a third of Vancouverites (36 per cent) said they are fans of the FIFA World Cup, and 27 per cent are fans of European soccer. That's six per cent more for each type of soccer than in the rest of Canada.

Those numbers aren't surprising to B.C. Soccer Association executive director Bjorn Osieck.

"Vancouver is a very international, multicultural melting pot of soccer [fans] -- or football, as we like to say. In that sense, I could imagine that's why people feel that allegiance and strong sense of interest," he said.
